A Paul Sormani Louis XV-Style Mahogany and Parquetry Bureau Plat with Gilt Bronze Mounts, Paris, France, late 19th century

31-1/2 h x 71-1/2 w x 35-3/4 d inches (80.0 x 181.6 x 90.8 cm)

The bureau plat with rectangular top fitted with a tooled leather top, surrounded by a gilt bronze egg-and-dart border and molded edge anchored by shell mounts, above three shaped drawers with diaperwork parquetry and framed by gilt bronze borders, each drawer centering scrolling foliage and armorial crest escutcheon and handles, three false drawers to verso, conforming parquetry to the sides with finely cast bacchanal masks mounts, all raised on cabriole legs headed by female busts transitioning into scrolling foliage, terminating on well detailed lion paw feet.
