The pair of exuberantly carved oak armchairs with addorsed scroll cartouche form backs, scrolled arms, shaped seat and cabriole legs on casters, upholstered in contemporary wool needlework to the seat, arms and back with brass nail head trim, the back with petit point armorial of Wilson of Eshton Hall and motto Res Non Verba.

This pair of chairs is from a suite depicted in a steel-engraved plate of the Library at Eshton Hall published in C.J. Stewart, A Catalogue of the Library Collected by Miss Richardson Currer at Eshton Hall, Craven, Yorkshire, 1833.

Eshton Hall in Craven, Yorkshire, was rebuilt by Mathew Wilson IV (1772-1854) between 1825 and 1827 according to the designs of the local architect George Webster. Ledgers from the period 1825 to 1841 detailing the rebuilding of Eshton, preserved in the Collection of the Yorkshire Archaeological Society, detail the provision of furnishings of the house provided through the Upholsterer and Cabinet Manufacturer John Kendell of Leeds. Though this particular set of chairs is not specifically mentioned, they relate to an entry dated September 8, 1828 for the provision of "1 Large Handsome Knotted Oak Libr(ary) Table richly carved, fitted up w(i)th drawers, & french polished, the top covered with Morocco Leather & Gilded."

The frames for these chairs would have been outsourced by Kendell to J. Williamson of London, whose stamp appears on each frame, while the upholstery work, including the armorial, would have been supplied by Kendell.
