    Description

A GEORGE III PAINTED, CARVED AND GILT PEMBROKE TABLE
Attributed to George Brookshaw, London, England, circa 1788
    Unmarked
    28-5/8 x 39-1/4 x 27-1/8 inches (72.7 x 99.7 x 68.9 cm)

The white-painted Pembroke table with carved gilt swag decoration to drawer front and back, raised on gilt edged tapered legs on casters centering beading below gilt floral boss, the top with painted floral border centering three hand-colored aquatint engravings after Angelika Kauffman.

This table is part of a suite of white-painted and gilt furniture with medallions of hand-colored engravings after Angelika Kauffman commissioned by James Beal Bonnell. Besides this table, the suite consisted of eight open armchairs and a triple chairback settee (sold Christies London, June 2001), a pair of torchere stands and a pair of pole screens.

Traditionally associated with Upton House in Essex which was inherited by James Beal Bonnell in 1774, it is more likely that this suite was commissioned for Pelling Place in Old Windsor which became Bonnell's main residence in 1788.

In 1788 the London cabinetmaker George Brookshaw was commissioned by Bonnell to furnish a chimney piece for the Drawing Room at Pelling Place, which featured painted copper plaques of Orpheus and Eurydice after Angelika Kauffman (sold Sotheby's London, July 2000). This chimney piece relates directly to the design of this suite of furniture, and it is assumed that Brookshaw was responsible for the furniture as well. Further support is provided through a hand written catalog of Pelling Place dated August 1852 which lists this suite of furniture as being in the Drawing Room.
