Sierra Nevada Mountains, Placer County, California, USA
Besides frying unlucky/unwise golfers and hikers, any lightning that strikes the ground tends to leave signs of its passage. Strikes on certain types of soil or sand can fuse these materials, leaving a permanent relic of the transitory event. The momentary discharge of thousands of amperes of current through these materials can result in tubes, composed chiefly of glass mixed with whatever impurities were present in the ground at the time. This natural phenomenon is applied to a group known as "Fulgurites," named after the Latin term for "lightning." They can be found wherever the conditions are right for their formation. This Fulgurite has inclusion of a few, larger chunks of gravel on the exterior and the presence of a large, white area just inside one end of the main "trunk" of the branching structure. Also in this area are some fine roots that post-date the formation of the Fulgurite.
