This view of the Charles River is a remarkable early work by D. Jerome Elwell, a Massachusetts landscape painter and illustrator. He produced it when he was just 20 years old. Although it displays an artistic debt to the work of an earlier generation of Hudson River School painters, the landscape also shows an awareness of the more contemporary efforts of Winslow Homer and Thomas Eakins, but with a distinctive personality of its own. The original composition steers clear of "formula": the riverbanks run at various angles to the picture plane, and islands interrupt an unobstructed view of the main waterway. The way Elwell describes clouds as wind-tossed cotton balls is notable for its fresh observation, as is the calligraphy describing reeds in the shallows. Elwell spent most of his life in Europe, painting in Belgium and Italy, where the pastels and watercolors he made on brown paper show the influence of Whistler.
