This lot is accompanied by a letter from Michael R. Grauer, Associate Director for Curatorial Affairs/Curator of Art, Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum.
Called the "Dean of Texas Artists," Frank Reaugh began painting in West Texas as early as 1883 and began bringing students to West Texas in the 1890s. A student of the St. Louis School of Fine Arts and the Académie Julian in Paris, Reaugh painted all over the western United States, including Wyoming, Colorado, California, Arizona, New Mexico, and especially Texas. This painting probably depicts one of the group of now-extinct volcanoes in West Texas, eastern New Mexico, or Mexico.
