David Dike, Dallas.
Frank Reaugh was an artist who devoted his considerable artistic skills to impressionistic depictions of West Texas. He has been called the "Dean of Texas Artists" because in the 1890s, the first of many art students began accompanying him on his frequent West Texas sketching trips. Most of Reaugh's pastels are small in size, and therefore, well adapted to transport and use in open country. This allowed him to travel the vast expanses of the state easily and to work in the outdoors with relatively little fuss. His pastel landscapes are considered some of the most poetic depictions of Texas ever produced.
Sept. 21 is an excellent example of Reaugh's early work in pastel. The palette and inscription indicate his 1890-95 career. In his early 1890s work he tended to use more bright greens to indicate the grasslands he was seeing in the "cattle country west of Fort Worth."
This is an exceptional example of Reaugh's paintings at this point in his career. His handling of the small herd of "Texas cattle" and the lone mesquite tree, using only a few strokes of the pastel crayon, speak to his mastery of this difficult medium. The "plunging perspective" results from his knowledge of Impressionist painting which he had seen in Paris at the Exposition Universelle and elsewhere in 1889. Moreover, Reaugh perfectly capture the treeless plains that extended from northwest Texas to Canada at this time.
