    Frank Reaugh (American, 1860-1945)
    Sketch -- Fence
    Pastel on paper
    5 x 6-1/2 inches (12.7 x 16.5 cm)

    Grogan and Company, Boston, Massachusetts, April 10, 2005, lot 95;
    Acquired by the present owner from the above.

    Untitled [Sketch---Fence] is an excellent example of Reaugh's early work in pastel and already shows his mastery of this difficult medium. The palette and signature speak to his pre-1885 career during which he saw color paintings for the first time in New York (probably at Goupil's gallery). His early work tends to lean toward the earth tones with a slightly greenish cast. This is an exceptional example of Reaugh's paintings at this point in his career. His handling of the rooftops and fences and especially the perspective of the fence and its cast shadow in the foreground-even at this youthful juncture--belie his skill for the remainder of his career
