Frank Duveneck was born from German stock in Covington, Kentucky. He trained in Munich during the 1870s, when artists were taught the kind of bravura brushwork against very dark backgrounds as seen here. He was greatly influenced by his instructor Wilhelm Leibl, who introduced him to the works of Hals, Velazquez and Goya. Duveneck was a realist whose paintings often reflect the sitter's character through confident brush strokes, design and color. His focus on light and shadow together with form suggest a vitality of movement. The legacy of Duveneck's work and his teachings place him squarely as a significant artist in the history of American art.
