Since the time the printed catalogue for this sale went to press, Millet scholar, Dr.Gina M. D'Angelo, kindly shared with Heritage some vital information on this painting and where it fits into the artist's oeuvre. She notes: "By May 1874, Millet had established himself on the island of Capri, where he remained for the summer, with occasional forays to Naples and the mainland...The springtime beauty of the island refreshed his spirits:
'You have no idea how beautiful Capri is in the spring. All the leaves are now out and the sun is very warm, while there is always a cool breeze from the sea. From my rook I can see almost to Sicily and the Bay of Naples is under my feet, for I am almost up in the clouds. It is a great relief to be here after the noisy disagreeable cities [Antwerp and Rome] and I don't wonder that so many artists live here always.'"
