    FRANCESCO CODINO (also known as Franz Godin) (Italian, active circa 1615-1635)
    A pair of still lifes with flowers, birds, and fruit, circa 1620s
    Oil on panel
    15 x 21 inches (each)

    Newhouse Galleries, New York (as Paul Liegeois);
    Mr. and Mrs. F. Howard Walsh, Fort Worth, Texas;
    Walsh Family Art Trust

    This pair of paintings can be attributed to Francesco Codino (also called Franz Godin) who may have been born in the Southern Netherlands around 1590, and was active both in Hanau/Frankfurt and Lombardy. In 1619, he trained in the atelier of Daniel Soreau in Hanau, and by 1621 is recorded in Italy where he probably died.

    Codino painted several variants of the present composition containing the bowl of fruit, although the composition with the basket appears to be unique. Neither of the present works is listed in Codino's oeuvre catalogue by Gerhard Bott, Ein Stück von allerlei Blumenwerk - ein Stück von Früchten - zwei Stück auf Tuch mit Hecht. Die Stillebenmaler Soreau, Binoit, Codino und Marrell in Hanau und Frankfurt 1600-1650, Hanau, 2001, nor in the chapter on the artist (as Godin) in Gianluca e Ulisse Bocchi (ed.) Naturaliter. Nuovi contributi alla natura morta in Italia settentrionale e Toscana tra XVII e XVIII secolo, Casalmaggiore, 1998. Bott lists eight versions of the bowl composition, his WV.C. (Werkverzeichnis Codino) 9 - W.V.C. 16, including examples dated 1621, 1622, 1623 and 16(31). This pair of paintings represents a new addition to Codino's known oeuvre.

    We are grateful to Mr. Fred G. Meijer of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, The Hague, for attributing these still life paintings to Codino, and for his kind assistance in cataloguing this lot.
