Description

Zilchovaspis Trilobite
Zilchovaspis rugosa
Lower Devonian
Morocco

Dating back to the Devonian Period some nearly 400 million years ago, this Trilobite genus Zilchovaspis has also been referred to as Odontochile. This dynamic looking creature seems to be in motion as large genal spines curl back off its parabolic-shaped head known as the cephalon. The posterior features the tiny tail characteristic of the type. The fossil evidences superb preservation with predominant "ribbed" lobes and a stepped form as the ancient creature is posed as if contracting and expanding in motion. A fine example, this massive matte black "bug" rests on a tax matrix. The head is naturally "stained" with rust orange and red hues on part of the cephalon and even thorax providing an unexpected pop of color.
