Description

Trilobite Fossil
Drotops armatus
Lower Devonian
Morocco

This impressive specimen of Drotops armatus comes from the Lower Devonian deposits of Morocco, a region long celebrated for producing some of the most striking Trilobites of the Paleozoic Era. Dating to roughly 400 million years ago, this large species is best known for its dramatic defensive spines, seen here in three distinct rows that form a natural protective armature. Measuring 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) in length, the Trilobite displays crisp segmentation and bold relief, its matte black exoskeleton set in attractive contrast against a mottled gray sedimentary matrix and positioned slightly offset for visual appeal. The detail across the surface is visually impressive, and most of the spines remain intact, reflecting highly skilled preparation and painstaking restoration. Large, well-prepared examples such as this are especially desirable for the obvious commanding presence and for what they represented in terms of the ancient Devonian seas.
Overall Measurements: 5.61 x 4.67 x 2.56 inches (14.25 x 11.87 x 6.51 cm)
