Description

Fossil Trilobite
Dicranurus monstrosus
Lower Devonian
Lhandar Formation
Morocco

This remarkable specimen of Dicranurus monstrosus represents one of the most elaborate and visually striking Trilobites known from the Devonian deposits of Morocco. Resting atop a sandy tan matrix with a subtle natural rise, the fossil's dark exoskeleton contrasts sharply with the surrounding rock, emphasizing its very dramatic silhouette. The prehistoric arthropod appears quite ominous in form, bristling with numerous elongated spines, including two dominant cranial extensions that sweep backward in elegant arcs reminiscent of a ram's horns. Such extraordinary ornamentation has long made Dicranurus one of the most sought-after Trilobites among collectors and researchers alike, illustrating the remarkable diversity of Trilobite morphology during the Paleozoic Era. Painstaking restoration and superb preparation have brought the intricate anatomy into full view, resulting in an exceptional and visually commanding example of this highly celebrated and popular species.
