Description

Fossil Trilobite
Drotops megalomanicus
Middle Devonian
Bou Dib Formation
Mrakib, Morocco

This impressive specimen of Drotops megalomanicus dates to the Middle Devonian and represents one of the largest and most visually commanding Trilobites known from the fossil-rich deposits of Morocco. Measuring nearly 5.5 inches (14 cm) in length, the fossil marine arthropod is presented in classic fashion upon a rounded oval of finely stippled gray matrix, a preparation style that highlights the animal's form. The robust, dark exoskeleton exhibits a subtle natural curl, giving the Trilobite the appearance of being captured mid-movement along the ancient seafloor. The pronounced lobes are punctuated with small remnant nodes marking the bases of former spines, while the cephalon displays particularly well-defined features, including the characteristically detailed compound eyes of the species. The restored specimen is in overall good condition with only indications of minimal stabilization and presents as an attractive, substantial example of this most iconic Devonian Trilobite.
Overall Measurements: 7.09 x 5.00 x 2.42 inches (18.00 x 12.71 x 6.14 cm)

Provenance: Private North Texas Collection
