    FINE TRILOBITE
    Psychopyge elegans

    The trilobite is one of the strangest-looking creatures to be found in the fossil record, and the Psychopyge species is outstandingly bizarre even for this class. The long shovel-like rostrum protruding from the cephalon is immediately distinctive, used perhaps for scooping up food. That the preparation of this example is of superlative quality is attested to by the spectacular detail of the holochroal eyes, by the aforementioned rostrum protruding almost entirely self-supported from the matrix and by the perfectly picked out occipital, axial, and pleural spines, with the three rows on the thorax completely free-standing. This first-class specimen is resting in an elegant swooping pose on natural limestone matrix and measures 5¾ inches in length.
