Description
CLASSIC OKLAHOMA TRILOBITEHuntoniatonia oklahomae
Lower Devonian
Haragan Formation
Clarita, Coal County, Oklahoma, USA
Oklahoma is certainly known for many things, but, in terms of paleontology, the classic Trilobites from the southern part of the state, out of the world-famous Haragan Formation, are something to behold. The very popular and aptly named Huntoniatonia oklahomae is one of the most sought after of these. The order to which this group belongs is distinguishable by an intricately detailed compound eye. The multiple species of this genus, originally termed Huntonia before being renamed in 1993, are the largest Trilobites of the Haragan fauna. This superlative example, fondly named "Lyla's Bug" in homage to the finder's collecting partner, is a whopping five and a half inches (13.97 cm) in length. The specimen here is all original, and there is only one minor chip on the left genal spine. The piece exhibits several patches of "discoloration" which show as a grayish white against the mostly caramel fossilization of the specimen. These areas are natural, and the result of a slight difference in the mineralization of the carapace on the Trilobite. This phenomenal example, surely one of the largest ever discovered on the vaunted Black Cat Mountain locality, comes with a copy of the book Black Cat Mountain signed by "Lyla" which is #18 of an edition of 25. This is as good as they come.
Overall Measurements: 5.54 x 3 inches (14.08 x 7.62 cm)
