"Spiny" Phacops Trilobite

Even smaller trilobites can have quite intimidating appearances, so larger examples - especially those with extreme armor and defensive spines - can really look dangerous. The "spiny" variety of Phacops known as Drotops like this impressive representative exemplify such characteristics. This arthropod is some 6 inches (15 cm) long and features numerous short but sharp spines all over its black form. This fossil sits securely in a matrix of tannish-gray color, which frames the piece nicely from the underside. The compound visual systems are pronounced and sizable even relative to the large size of the marine creature. This is one serious specimen, which definitely looks the part. This is a top Moroccan trilobite.
