Description
Trilobite Fossil Multi-PlateArctinurus boltoni
Silurian
Rochester Shale Formation
Middleport, New York, USA
The fossils of the Silurian-age Rochester Shale were first brought to light during the construction of the Erie Canal between 1814 and 1825-an undertaking that inadvertently revealed one of the most important Paleozoic fossil localities in North America. Yet, rather than celebration, these discoveries initially provoked confusion among early naturalists, who had never before encountered such a profusion of exquisitely preserved ancient life. This formation would soon become the basis for some of the earliest scientific descriptions of prehistoric genera, forever securing its place in paleontological history. Among its most remarkable inhabitants was the Trilobite Arctinurus boltini-a species celebrated for its imposing size, intricate ornamentation, and scientific importance. Specimens of Arctinurus are considered the pinnacle of Rochester Shale Trilobites, combining academic value with extraordinary aesthetic appeal. The present multiple, overlapping specimen represents a particularly significant find. The arrangement preserves several large individuals in close association, a configuration seldom encountered in this species. The plate's composition, rarity, and superb preservation underscore its status as a museum-grade example and a masterpiece of Silurian paleontology-a testament to both the grandeur of prehistoric marine life and the enduring legacy of early American fossil discovery.
