DescriptionTEXAS PETRIFIED WOOD SLAB
Eocene, Yagua Formation
Madison County, Texas, USA
Petrified Wood from Texas may not be particularly colorful, but that does not mean it is unattractive. This specimen is a case in point: Petrified Alangium, which possesses an excellent polish that brings out the very fine "grain" visible across the surface. The Alangium that grew back in the Eocene in what is now eastern Texas was similar to the Dogwood trees of today. However, Alangium is now only found in Asia, India and parts of Africa and no longer grows in North America. It was a tree that thrived in the warmer climate of the Eocene. This log, from of the Yagua Formation, was found on a sprawling cattle ranch in Madison County, Texas alongside logs of palm, as well as other hardwoods, including Live Oak and Persimmon. As a specimen, this piece is incredibly well preserved and even shows wonderful cell structure under magnification. The secondary Agate visible in the center adds to the beauty and uniqueness of this piece.
