RARE PARTIAL FOSSIL PALM FROND WITH FISH
Sabalites sp., Phareodus testis
Eocene
Green River Formation, Wyoming
This fossil palm frond plaque epitomizes the aesthetic beauty, the first-class preservation and the remarkable biodiversity of fossils found Green River Formation of Wyoming. Famed for its fish fossils, the area is also notable for its flora, soft material that in most other parts of the world decomposed before having a chance to be preserved in the fossil record. Palms are exceptionally scarce even here, however, as their thin leaves usually disintegrate and even if preserved, are easily lost amidst the sedimentary layers, and as a result they are highly prized by collectors. This dramatic plaque displays a large and fine example, and in a wonderful representation of Eocene life (50 million years ago) it is coupled for all eternity with an excellent inset specimen of the comparatively rare Phareodus testis, a fatter and less common fish than its sister the P. encaustus. This species is immediately identifiable from its long splayed pectoral fin and numerous sharp little teeth - the name means "to have tooth" - and even by the high standards of the Fossil Butte this is an excellently preserved example with superb detail and definition, of a good size at 12½ inches long. This incredible plaque has been skillfully prepared by hand and comes with built-in hardware for easy wall hanging. A world class plate, the fossils exhibits a lovely soft brown shading that harmonizes perfectly with the pale cream of the irregularly shaped 41 x 41-inch matrix.
