Petrified Wood TableAraucarioxylon arizonicum
Triassic
Chinle Formation
Arizona, USA
During the Triassic, ancient pine trees were buried in mineral-rich material, protecting them from all the destructive forces which should have destroyed them. Through a series of rare and unusual events, organic wood, in select instances through a process called "capillary attraction," absorbed elements that replaced the natural wood fibers with hard silica (Quartz) cell by cell. The presence of metal salts, along with other elements, resulted in the amazing colors now so associated with this high quality material. It should be noted that only a tiny fraction of all Petrified Wood is of the integrity which can be turned into cut and polished specimens with such appeal and value. This is a functional piece of true natural beauty.
A large and superb quality specimen of coveted "rainbow" Petrified Wood from Arizona which has been cut and polished is about as good as it can get when it comes to fossils which are truly works of lapidary art. This long cut board can testify to that premise. The tabletop features broad stripes of vibrant colors which transverse the surface horizontally. Swaths of rust orange, violet blue, and mustard yellow sweep across the smooth polished tabletop. Of particular note, the ancient pine tree remnant features a "knot" near the center of the piece which really adds an unmistakable character to the incredibly vivid tabletop.
Unlike slabs which are slices of longer logs, board cuts go in the opposite direction paralleling the length of the log. Such pieces tend to be larger - and thicker - carrying considerable weight. This amazing board specimen was treated with a fracture sealer after it was cut then backed with a wood reinforcement and sealed with a fiberglass coating. The tabletop is quite sturdy and, even, scratch-resistant due to the hard Quartz which it contains. This example of the finest Petrified Wood available has now been turned into a coffee table with study metal legs attached to the reinforcing wooden underside. The legs are finished in an artistic manner resemblant of natural wood with a golden hued sheen which goes perfectly with this coloful board. The "one-of-a-kind" coffee table will certainly be the focal point of any space it will grace.
