    Petrified Wood Slab
    Quercus simulata
    Stinking Water Pass
    Harney County, Oregon, USA

Petrified Wood collectors and aficionados will be familiar with material from "Stinking Water" which is a very well-known locality and produces exquisite examples of the botanical fossil. The "Golden Oak" from the vaunted Oregon location is highly agatized and finely preserved, which allows for a "mirror" shine on the polished faces of cut specimens. The incredible slab is an ideal representation of the famous popular variety of Petrified Wood. This larger piece, shaped somewhat like the country of Australia in the abstract, exhibits a fine "hair-like" fibrous pattern which is consistent with the highly-detailed preservation of the unique fossil slab. The central "eyes" are impressive with some of the diagnostic black patches within a creamy tan kidney shaped area which is irregularly ringed in brown then radiates to the peripheral edge. The piece does exhibit repairs of cracks which indicate the slab was once in several pieces and put back together. The linear fissures are visible - but only slightly noticeable to the touch - on the glassy surface. This slab is from a world famous location and is hard to access as the wood-bearing strata is covered by a tough volcanic cap further making recovery of the phenomenal Petrified Wood variety more difficult.

It would indeed have been much simpler to work with a local auction house, and we had local options. But we never once regretted going with Heritage.
