Jurassic - 200 million years old
    Chinle Formation, Arizona

Similar to the previous lot, this handsome petrified wood stump was cut from a larger log found near Arizona's Petrified Forest National Park. A portion of the log fortuitously reveals its mesmerizing internal structure which is accented in ochres and yellows and a range of milky-whites and charcoals. The undulating top portion of the log was polished to a mirror finish. The exterior surface features large sections of petrified bark. Deep longitudinal furrows extending the length of the exterior surface provide further character.
Petrified wood is, in fact, wood that became stone (quartz) through the fossil replacement process of petrification where silica-rich sediments slowly seep into logs cell by cell. The robust coloration results from the presence of varying amounts of trace elements and minerals in the sediments: manganese adds the pinks and iron oxide creates the red and yellows. This 200,000,000 year-old petrified natural sculpture measures 15 ½ inches in diameter and stands 23 ½ inches tall. Captivating from any angle or perspective.
