    Ginkgo beckii
    Wanapum Basalt Formation
    Yakima Ridge Military Installation
    Yakima County, Washington

This extremely rare specimen of petrified wood is Ginkgo and was collected at the Yakima Ridge Military Installation between 1959 and 1964 with the permission of an officer stationed there at the time. At present day, native ginkgo trees are only found in the Zhejiang Province in eastern China. All the decorative ginkgo trees worldwide originated from the small stands there. Ginkgo specimens have been found in North America as far back as the Triassic Period but have been extinct since the Miocene. This unique locality has also produced other varieties of petrified wood including elm, bald cypress and dawn redwood. Petrified ginkgo is one of the rarest and, therefore, most sought after variety of petrified wood in the world. This piece is an absolutely gorgeous specimen of rare petrified wood exhibiting a range for colors from light creams to dark browns. It has a unique shape and is a classic example of petrified wood from the Pacific Northwest - which is typically characterized by lighter colors - creams, browns, tans, etc.
    12.5 x 10.75 inches (31.75 x 27.31 cm).
    Offered at no reserve.

    Provenance: A Private California Collection
