    Description

    PETRIFIED TREE FERN
    Psaronius sp.
    Permian
Bielandia area, Filadelfia County, Tocantins Prov., Brazil

This slab of Petrified Wood is from Psaronius, a tree fern from Brazil. The specimen was collected and exported many years ago, as the area has since been designated Brazilian National Park, and no more specimens can be extracted. The Permian Age forests in which Psaronius grew consisted of several different varieties of ferns, as well as an early conifer known as Dadoxylon. The deposits are known for outstanding preservation of its fossils. This section of Psaronius is from the very top of the plant - a very fragile part of the fern, not typically preserved. Called "starling stone" after the similarly speckled plumage of the European Starling, the banding displayed is reminiscent of Laguna Agate. The slice shows lovely tan, brown and pink hues along with a small amount of black. It is well polished on both sides.
    Overall Measurements: 4.08 x 3.76 x 0.65 inches (10.37 x 9.56 x 1.65 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.
