Description

Petrified Ginkgo Slab
Ginkgo sp.
Miocene
Wanapum Basalt Formation
"Vantage," Kittitas County, Washington, USA

Inherently rare and highly collectible, Petrified Ginkgo Wood is well-known to serious collectors. From the famous "Vantage" site in Washington, this slab features a big hole, multiple bands of various hues, and a pleasing blend of earthy tones. The round measures just shy of 9 inches (23 cm) at the maximum dimension with random dotting of brown accents over the polished surface of the botanical fossil. Such material is atypical in terms of Petrified Wood, and it is not hard to understand why it is so prized. After the end of the Miocene, Ginkgo is no longer represented in the fossil record with the only native living population in China. All living Ginkgo seen today originated from a small grove there. This specimen was collected from private lands on a ranch bordering the Ginkgo Petrified Forest State Park in the Wanapum Recreational Area on the shoreline of the Columbia River in Washington State.
Measurements: 8.66 x 7.17 x 0.79 inches (22.00 x 18.20 x 2.00 cm)
