DescriptionPETRIFIED CYCAD SLICE
Cycads are considered living fossils; they are evergreens that have stout trunks and a crown of leaves and have been on earth for over 280 million years. Even though they were common at one point, it is still very difficult to find good fossilized cycad trunks and even more difficult to get a good slice of one. This slice of cycad comes from the Cretaceous of South Dakota and is a nice cross-section of a trunk; featuring a porous core and horizontal cross-sections of the characteristic diamond-shaped cells. The slice, measuring 10 x 6 x ¼ inches is polished on one side and has stabilizing resin on the reverse.
