Petrified Wood

Petrified Conifer Slab
Araucarioxylon arizonicum
Triassic
Chinle Formation
Arizona, USA

This remarkable slab is a cross-section of Araucarioxylon arizonicum, an extinct conifer that flourished in the Late Triassic, over 200 million years ago. Sourced from the iconic Chinle Formation in Arizona-home to some of the world's most celebrated petrified forests-this specimen preserves in exquisite detail the internal growth structure of ancient wood, now entirely replaced by mineral. The slab displays vibrant hues of reddish-pink, burgundy, and chocolate brown, with concentric growth rings clearly visible in polished cross-section. Subtle zoning of mineral infill, likely including silicates such as Quartz, Chalcedony, and Jasper, adds to its visual complexity. Veins of white and bluish-gray lend contrast and enhance the dynamic, swirling appearance. Petrified Wood of this size and coloration is increasingly rare, and this specimen is particularly well-suited for both scientific appreciation and decorative display.
