Description

Petrified "Colla" Wood Slab
Miocene
Zile District, Tokat Province
Turkey
8.70 x 5.41 x 0.52 inches (22.10 x 13.73 x 1.31 cm)

This fantastic slab of Petrified Wood is known as "Colla" Wood and hails from a single locality-Turkey. The material is notable and coveted for the presence of Chrysocolla and other Copper-based minerals, which gives the material its appealing rainbow-like appearance. From a relatively new find, this sizable slab has been cut from a larger log and exhibits a predominately yellowish-orange hue due to a high concentration of Hematite. The black core draws the viewer in, and other details begin to emerge, such as the surrounding sections of bright teal Chrysocolla and Azurite, further drawing the eye to the growth ring patterns and the rich outer orange ring, very unusual for the variety and new to the market. The color combination and patterning are awe-inspiring. This thick slab is from a relatively 'new' find in 2013, and this variety of Petrified Wood has become very popular among collectors for its rarity and coloration. Petrified Wood from the Zile region produces bright, electrifying colors not seen anywhere else in the world, though this particular mine produces very few collector-grade specimens, which makes this slab very rare and highly sought-after. Furthermore, complete rounds, such as this example with remnant bark, are scarce for this locale, and rounds of this quality are even rarer. This exceptional offering has been professionally cut, stabilized, and polished and would make a true highlight for any collector at any level.
