OVAL PETRIFIED WOOD SLICE

This magnificent section of a 210 million year old petrified log was recovered from just outside the Petrified Forest National Park in Winslow, Arizona; the finest locality in the world for these floral fossils. This specimen, like other examples of petrified wood, was fossilized when a log was completely covered with silica-rich sediments that seeped into the wood and hardened over the millions of years. The beautiful coloration - cloudy blue-gray rimmed with reddish cream and dashed with orange, yellow and green - is the result of trace elements and minerals in the surrounding sediment. Of an elegant ovular shape, one surface has been polished to a mirror-like smoothness and the outer surface retains the perfectly-preserved and highly-textured bark. A particularly aesthetic specimen, it measures approximately 29½ x 18 inches.
