Large Petrified Wood Stump
    Araucarioxylon arizonicum
    Triassic, Chinle Formation
    Arizona, USA

Colorful Petrified Wood from the renowned Chinle Formation is impressive simply for its natural beauty, not to mention the fact that: the popular material also happens to be a fossil which dates back some 200 million years ago. Logs of ancient pine trees died and rolled into a river forming a log jam before getting covered with a layer of overburden. Through capillary attraction, minerals replaced the organic wood, and the presence of various elements, including metal salts resulted in the rainbow of colors. This piece is spectacular because of its size. This big stump has the added impact of looking like an ancient tree. Its sheer size makes this a major example of Petrified Wood. The rolling polished surface, peripheral "bark" rind, and its "stump" shape and form, all combine to result in this superbly unique and spectacular specimen. A wide irregular ring of rust orange-red outlines a broad and circular heart of magenta, mustard, blue and black on the undulating surface of this huge and wonderful treasure from the Triassic. This specimen was expertly polished by a lapidary artist from Arizona, who was trained in Japan by a master in the art of contour polishing. The process is extremely labor-intensive, and the rolling surface is a key characteristic this significant piece.
    Overall Measurements: 18.1 x 15.4 x 9.8 inches (46.0 x 39.0 x 25.0 cm)
