    Description

    Gingko Leaf
    Ginkgo adiantoides
    Paleocene
    Sentinel Butte Formation
    Morton County, North Dakota
    6.73 x 4.66 x 1.20 inches (17.10 x 11.83 x 3.04 cm)

This winnowing fan-shaped fossil leaf, obviously, comes from a Gingko, and the botanical remnant has a part of the stem protruding from the broad example. The specimen requires a close look as the contrast between the rust-colored matrix and the orangey leaf is not sharp. However, the gray-blue brushstrokes of the delicate venation are extremely fine and come through the otherwise fairly monochromatic plate. This leaf is nearly 3 inches (7.6 cm) across and has a small, nearly round, "bullet hole" indentation in the middle of the fan. The piece has plenty of texture and character on the rock, and the backside is a totally different color and texture with a mossy coating of grainy, whitish-yellow over most of the rugged back.

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
