    Sabalites sp.
    Green River Formation

    Fossil Lake, Kemmerer, Wyoming

That climate changes is a fact that all geologists are aware of. One of the proofs of this is that 56 million years ago, the climate in this part of Wyoming was very similar to Northern Florida. Numerous palm trees dotted the landscape and occasionally fronds from these palms ended up in Fossil Lake, where conditions were perfect for preservation of plant and animal remains that sank into the anoxic lower waters of the lake, where they were gently buried, by a constant shower of calcium carbonate mud. The perfect layering of these muds ultimately made the task of commercial paleontologists much easier since the now solid limestone loves to split along those layered bedding planes laid down so long ago. When properly done, the splitting operation can result in a pair of slabs, each with a mirror image impression of the palm frond pressed flat between the layers. That is the case with this matched "positive/negative" pair of slabs. A single frond graces the surface of each slab rendered in the light tan color of cast-off palm leaves and stems. Both palm impressions measure about 44 x 54 inches (111.76 x 137.16 cm) while the slabs measure around 48 x 60 inches (121.92 x 152.40 cm) overall. There has been a certain amount of restoration: not unusual with fossils of this areal extent.
