Description

Fossil Palm Frond
Sabalites sp. and Priscacara sp.
Eocene
Green River Formation
Wyoming, USA

The Green River Formation Lagerstätte is world-renowned for producing incredible fossils, primarily fish, and other more exotic varieties of marine life. Larger plates with varied fossils have been long prized for both their paleontological and decorative aspects. This massive example is framed with a metal banding and contains an expansive Fossil Palm of the Sabalites genus as well as one sizable Priscacara Fossil Fish. The dark brown botanical fossil features numerous pinnate leaves, some which are truncated, as well as a long stem that actually widens as it grows away from the plant. The specimen was placed in a complex sedimentary matrix with mottled appearance and numerous thin layers known as "varves" representing seasonal depositions. The background rock contains multiple natural fracture lines that actually give the piece a rustic, authentic look. This heavy and enormous fossil plate offers unlimited decorative potential and represents a diorama of the freshwater Eocene environment that was geologically rather significant. Expert preparation after excavation results in museum quality pieces like this dramatic huge Fossil Palm. The framed item measures 60.5 inches (154 cm) by 45 inches (114 cm) and can hang on reinforced walls.
Overall Measurements: 60.50 x 45.00 x 2.25 inches (153.67 x 114.30 x 5.71 cm)
