    FOSSIL FERN PLATE
    Pecopteris sp.
    Carboniferous
    Monteceau, France
    Pecopteris is the foliage of the giant seed fern, Psaronius, a relative of today's Marattiales, that grew as enormous trees up to 50 feet tall and appeared on earth long before the first dinosaurs. This plaque is a fine example of the species, the mass of rich black fronds with jaggedly-defined outlines stands out strongly from the gray shale matrix, 21½ x 20 inches.
