    Cycadiodea ingens
    Meade County, South Dakota, USA

Anyone who says that a Cycad cannot be a thing of beauty has never seen an end cut like this Cycadeoid with its crisply polished face with intense patterns of blues and blacks. The evolution of Cycadeoids seems to have paralleled the rise and fall of the Dinosaurs. Although this particular specimen dates to the Cretaceous Period, the earlier Jurassic Period is often referred to as the "Age of Cycads" as these plants were the dominant vegetation of the day. This fine example was named the "Crescent Moon" Cycad due to the shape of its frond pattern, and the dichotomy of the smooth polished face against the ruggedly pocked end makes this an excellent representative specimen of the variety. This end cut is impressive for aesthetic appeal, as well as its massive size, which is formidable. The piece is in great condition, exhibiting only a minor amount of visible chipping, and weighs a substantial 23 lbs. (10.45 kg). The full specimen, as found, weighed 150 lbs. (68.18 kg). The piece certainly proves that Cycads actually can be quite attractive.
    Overall Measurements: 13.25 x 9 x 5 inches (33.66 x 22.86 x 12.70 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.
