DescriptionFINE PETRIFIED WOOD SLAB
Chinle formation, Arizona
This lovely piece of petrified wood is from the famed Chinle Formation in the desert badlands of Arizona and New Mexico, where over 200 million years go there flourished a forest of conifers that towered as much as 200 feet high. They are preserved today as "rainbow" wood, so-named for the fantastic array of colors imparted by mineral-rich water seepage over the millions of years. The present slice is a predominantly soft blue-gray in color, with a lovely cloudy appearance that includes patches of green, red, orange, and white. Bordered with an intricate patterning of red and black. The slice has been brought to a lustrous polished finish on its face, but retains the terrifically textured natural bark crust and measures 14 inches wide.
