FINE PETRIFIED WOOD SLAB
Araucarioxylon arizonicum
Upper Triassic
Chinle formation, Arizona

The "rainbow" wood of the Chinle Formation in Arizona is famed worldwide for its incredible array of colors. A 225 million year old forest, the giant trunks of the ancient Monkey Puzzle tree have been transformed inexorably over time by mineral replacement on a cellular level, different minerals providing different colors and creating some of Nature's most incredible natural canvases. The present specimen is of particularly high quality; whereas the polished slabs often have a cloudy nebulous patterning of colors, we can see here the original tree's growth rings in striking definition. The predominant shades are a lovely strong blue-gray and a deep velvety indigo, offset by black, white and dramatic splashes of vivid red-orange. The surface of this complete slice has been brought to a lustrous polished finish and the edge retains the natural rough bark texture; a fine-sized example of these highly desirable specimens, it measures 34 3/8 x 27 x 1ΒΌ inches.
