    FINE FOSSIL SYCAMORE LEAF
    Platanus wyomingensis
    Eocene
    Green River Formation, Utah
    Finely preserved plant foliage material in the fossil record is rare, due to the swiftness of decay and the delicate nature of leaves. However, the Green River Formation has been a source of many fine plant specimens, such as this wonderfully preserved sycamore leaf. The leaf has preserved venation leading from the stem and fine serrations along the margins. This beautiful specimen, measuring 3 ¼ x 4 inches, is a carbonized brown color in contrast to the gray matrix, measuring 4 ½ x 5 ¾ inches.
