Brushy Basin Member of the Morrison Formation
Yellow Cat area, Thompson Uranium/Vanadium District, Grand County, Utah

This extraordinary Yellow Cat "Red wood" log is arguably one of the finest Petrified Wood logs ever found. The Yellow Cat "Red wood" is highly sought after by fossil wood aficionados worldwide because the colorful agate replacement is unprecedented. "Red wood" refers to the bright orange to deep red carnelian limb casts from the Yellow Cat Flat area of Utah and is purely a color description and not a reference to a specific tree species. It is conjectured that the original trees were in all probability a type of conifer. This specific log was featured in the May 2001 issue of Rock and Gem magazine, before it was meticulously prepared and polished. The red exterior of the log retains all of the contours of the original wood structure, while the interior agate colors runs the gamut from intense fire engine red to brilliant orange to pure white to lavender grays. Due to the hardness of the fossil and the surrounding matrix in which it was encased, preparation of the log took hundreds of hours of painstaking work. The log is segmented into five pieces, along natural breaks, and each piece has its individual custom base. Some of the exposed ends are natural and others are polished mirror-bright to better highlight the banded agate patterns. There is a natural druzy cavity, lined with amethyst and quartz crystals, running throughout most of the log. Individual segments measure: 5 x 5 x 3 ¼ inches, 4 1/8 x 5 ¼ x 4 ½ inches, 11 ¼ x 5 5/8 x 4 ½ inches, 4 ¾ x 6 x 4 ¾ inches and finally 9 ½ x 6 ¼ x 4 ½ inches respectively. Complete logs with fine agatization such as this are exceedingly rare: most material from the Yellow Cat are usually just shattered, undefined pieces and when log or limb segments are found, they are usually sliced up and polished. This Petrified Wood log is in very fine condition.
