    Brazilian Fern Log
    Psaronius brasiliensis
    Lower Permian, Motuca Formation
    Filadélfia Co., Tocantins, Brazil

This stout log measures 7 inches (17.8 cm) in height and 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) in diameter. It is very robust and certainly looks like Petrified Wood both inside and out. The rind has "bark" all around the perimeter, and the two polished faces on both ends of the log exhibit the porous nature of the ancient tree fern. The bark is a golden brown, with ideal texture, and the surfaces are light tan and brown, with a rim of salmon adding color to the sharply patterned "core" of the log. There is a unique vascular "bundle" some 2 inches (5.08 cm) across, showing the sinuous banding of the xylem preserved in this section of a fossil tree fern dating back to the Permian. The ranchos in Brazil, where the formation was exposed, are now closed to collecting. This and other similar specimens were imported over 20 years ago and are some of the best preserved tree ferns in the world, down to the cellular level.
    Overall Measurements: 7.0 x 6.5 x 6.3 inches (17.8 x 16.5 x 15.9 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.

While I regret my inability to personally view the work, you provided an excellent substitute for my not being able to do so, and I look forward to future Heritage auctions.
