    Description

    AGATIZED PETRIFIED WOOD
    Natogyi, Mandalay Division, Myanmar (Burma)

Petrified wood comes from a lot of places around the globe these days, compared to 20 years or more in the past, when the supply was largely composed of North American material. One of the more recent entrants into the market is the distinctive version found in the area of Natogyi in what is now called Myanmar. Burmese examples of this material can generally be distinguished by two features: 1) the presence of a pure white coloration somewhere in the piece, and frequently - green as well; 2) the intricacy of carving and polishing done to emphasize the complex surfaces left by the unique pre-burial conditions that shaped the wood before silica replacement had ever started. Much like the few examples from Oregon where petrification of fire damaged trees have been observed, in a similar vein, the Burmese wood was buried and replaced, but only after rotting of the wood had started, giving rise to strange shapes that were highlighted by the exposure of these exotic shapes by skillful hand preparation. This sizable log shows the pure white mentioned above along with tan to reddish brown coloration also consistent with the given origin. The exterior has been polished to enhance linear features that parallel the long axis of the tree "trunk." It is in pristine condition and it comes with a custom carved wooden base that allows the specimen to be rotated.
    Overall Measurements: 33.5 x 18 x 14 inches (85.09 x 45.72 x 35.56 cm)
