Anyone familiar with wood has observed the process of gradual breakdown that returns fallen logs back to the earth. What would a log look like if you were able to "freeze" this process part way through the transformation and exchange the perishable wood fibers for stone? The answer is before you. This log was partially decomposed on the surface before it was buried, probably in a volcanic ash-fall and the remainder of the log was replaced, cell by cell, by silica charged groundwater, furnished by the surrounding sediments. When recovered by artisanal miners from deep underground, so many millions of years later, the logs show fantastically complex areas where the remaining parts of the wood have become agate. Brokers buy the rough "logs" and transport them out of country; often to China, where Chinese lapidaries then follow the contours of the agatized rock with simple hand grinders and a lot of "elbow grease," before giving a final polish to the revealed forms. Looking down on the piece it is possible to clearly see the curvature of the original tree, which in this case appears to have been at least 18-24 inches in diameter. Condition of this one-of-a-kind specimen is pristine with no visible damage. It comes with a custom wooden base.
    Overall Measurements: 20 x 14 x 7 inches (50.8 x 35.56 x 17.78 cm)
