Natogyi, Mandalay Division, Myanmar (Burma)

With respect to large lapidary objects fashioned from natural stone, Petrified Wood being one of them, there is a middle ground between the simple "log" form of U.S. Petrified Wood and the ornate complexity of form seen in the "Scholar Stones" and Suiseki prized in the Orient. That middle ground is occupied by the petrified wood replacements that have emerged from exotic Burma, or Myanmar as they call it this week. Unlike the North American versions, the Burmese ones have been laboriously shaped using small hand grinders by local and Chinese stone carvers, and polished the same way. This is something that is not seen in U.S. Petrified Wood objects. Colors shown by this material are different than their North American counterparts. Here, the dominant body color is white and beige with occasional splashes of tan and in this special case - green. Green is a color rarely seen in association with petrified wood, which only adds to the desirability of this log. It is in pristine condition and it comes complete with a custom wooden base.
