Description

Woolly Mammoth Tusk
Mammuthus primigenius
Pleistocene
Alaska

Superlative terms are much too often overused when describing specimens, but this larger and top quality fossilized Mammoth Tusk is a truly spectacular example. The tusk was discovered outside of Fairbanks, Alaska by a miner who was working a Gold Mine. Most tusks found associated with Gold Mines are very fragile, but this significant piece is as sturdy as it is impressive. The polished tusk has been fossilized by the mineral Vivianite giving it a rich overall blue coloration from root to tip. Earth tones of cream, tan and brown round out the patterned smooth surface of the tusk which measures 51.5 inches (130 cm) from root to tip which is, of course, a deceptive figure since the long tusk has a pronounced and continuous curvature resulting in the actual length of the tusk (on the curve) being much longer than the root-to-tip measurement. Along the curve, the fantastic specimen is about 89 inches (226 cm) - nearly 7.5 feet! This is a major impact piece with unlimited decorative appeal, but there is no doubt this is without question museum quality. The specimen comes with a custom base which displays the tusk in a primarily vertical fashion for maximum effect. The large and curvaceous, brilliantly colored and patterned tusk, will be the focal point of any spot where it would be displayed.
Base measurements: 34.64 x 9.05 x 15.74 inches (88 x 23 x 40 cm)
