Description
Woolly Mammoth Polished Tusk SectionMammuthus primigenius
Pleistocene
Alaska
11.50 x 3.35 x 0.79 inches (29.21 x 8.50 x 2.00 cm)
This quite sizable section of Mammoth Tusk has a polished surface, with some cracking, but is otherwise relatively smooth for the material, which virtually always exhibits some fracturing and separations. Long for a piece of tusk at some 11.5 inches (29 cm), this is a big example of fossilized ivory. The underside is rough, and the natural layering of the once organic material is easily visible. The center of the bottom is a stark white and has a curved channel. The beautiful exterior is a taupe and white color with striations.
[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
