Description
Woolly Mammoth LegMammuthus primigenius
Pleistocene
Alaska, USA
This trio, consisting of two relatively massive bones and a fused toe association, represents the leg of a Woolly Mammoth. Mounted on a creative, custom stand, the two long bones are joined by a metal pin as all of the components fit on two rods, secured to the base. The inherent contrast in the colors of the three sections - brown, gray and tan - add a further dimension and visual dynamism to the fossil group. There is minor expected crack fill to the central shaft of the fibula and the distal portion of the tibia, but the overall condition of the piece can be considered close to 90 percent original bone. The relative size of the offering indicates it was likely a forelimb, and that allows this to fit into any room or office décor. The "Ice Age" fossil dating to the Pleistocene came from Alaska and is a great example of Mammuthus. The toes are composited from other animals, as is commonplace in such specimens, while the primary bones are all from the same animal.
Overall Measurements: 45.00 x 26.00 x 20.00 inches (114.30 x 66.04 x 50.80 cm)
