Description
Titanothere Teeth in Jaw SectionMegacerops platyceras
Eocene
White River Badlands
Pennington County, South Dakota
This fossilized jaw section is from an ancient beast known as a Titanothere (or "Brontothere") which is an extinct mammal which looked much like a rhinoceros although was more closely related to the horse. The North American variety Megaceroops had large, paired horns that, unlike those of rhinoceros, were composed of bone and were placed side-to-side as opposed to back to front. This fossil remnant has two complete large molar teeth secured in the bleached bone material. The broad, undulating teeth are milk chocolate brown with pronounced white roots that recess into the bony whitish section of the jaw. With massive surface area, the teeth are impressive individually and definitely daunting as a pair. This is a nice way to own a reasonably sized fossil remnant from a quite large creature. This is a classic fossil from the Badlands.
