Description
Titanothere Jaw Section with TeethTitanothere (Brontothere)
Eocene
White River Badlands, South Dakota, USA
The aptly named Titanothere was a large hoofed mammal that lived during the Eocene. Also known as Brontotheres, these beasts had massive skulls, with odd bony protuberances, on rather sizable bodies. A monster of the White River Badlands, the gargantuan creatures roamed the prehistoric landscape of the American West. This fossil remnant consists of a section of a jaw with a significant number of well-preserved teeth from the "thunder beast," additionally referred to as a Megacerops. This partial mandible exhibits substantial restoration, including some visible crack fill, but the bony specimen is nicely formed and seriously robust. Six impressive teeth are 'rooted' in the jaw section and boast a subtle brownish coloration that contrasts markedly against the mottled, and bleached, coloration of the bony matrix, which measures nearly 15 inches (38 cm) in length. This bony section features a rounded end with a joint termination that rises perpendicularly to the bottom of the jaw.
Measurements: 14.65 x 7.99 x 2.40 inches (37.20 x 20.30 x 6.10 cm)
